Thaumatrope
A thaumatrope was a popular optical illusion in 1835 created by William Phillis. It is two images on side of a disk. When twisted quickly, the images appear to be merged.


How did it help?
It helped improve where animation was heading, that being stop motion. It helped with perspective of vision with the illusion of motion being created.
How to make!
Are they still useful?
Yes, they are still used today to educate creative minds to understand the basics of animation.
